Limerick City Development Board
The Vibrant City

Limerick City has a traditionally supported a vibrant and diverse population that should be retained. This is an important contributor to a sense of community identity and is linked to local economic diversity and long term sustainability. Changing demographics will impact on population diversity, however planning can play a role in helping to maintain diversity through the provision of a range of housing and accommodation, enabling population growth and attracting visitors etc.
Maintaining a diverse City population will be a catalyst in maintaining 'living' streets in the City. However there is a need to go beyond this and develop targeted policies to ensure that the vibrancy of the City is maintained and enhanced in the future.
To be truly vibrant we will also need to ensure that Limerick City has services, including entertainment, transport and retail services that are available day and night in the City.
The City population has recently stabilised at approximately 50,000 people. This is not expected to grow significantly as household trends in Ireland and the City of Limerick are experiencing declining household sizes, and at the same time there is little land available for new housing development in the City
